As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth; and he said to him, ‘Follow me.’ And he got up and followed him.” (Matthew 9:9)
Tom Young
This Sunday, June 7, we will be hearing about Jesus’ calling Matthew, the tax collector, to follow him. The account we read in the scriptures sounds like a quick and painless exchange, an automatic response to Jesus’ calling Matthew.
Jesus: Follow me.
Matthew: Ok.
This scene is marvelously depicted in “The Chosen” TV series. The writers of the series rely heavily on all four Gospels as well as the Old Testament. As a tax collector, Matthew’s character is hated by everyone, disowned by his parents, and all the while protected by the Romans from being stoned by his own people. Then one day Jesus shows up. What was going through his mind to cause him to say Yes?
We don’t know if Matthew was an ethical tax collector - only collecting the standard proscribed percent of the tax funds he took in. Many tax collectors were guilty of taking in much more. Regardless, they were all hated because they were seen as betraying their own people. In the eyes of his fellow Jews, Matthew was a lowlife. A scoundrel. Pond scum. But in the eyes of Jesus he was worth saving; not only saving, but walking with him to carry the message to his people. To us.
So what would you do if Jesus asked you to follow him?
When Jesus heard this, he said to them, ‘Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have come to call not the righteous but sinners.’ (Mark 2:17b)
