Some of the things that fascinate me about Christianity are not the consistent messages of God’s love for us and Jesus’ commitment to reaching out to the marginalized, but the instances in scripture where something unexpected happens. Jesus entering the temple and pitching the money lenders and dove salesmen out is one of them. The conversion of Saul in one of our readings for this week seems like another. Here we have a highly educated, prominent individual, well liked by both the Roman occupiers and Jewish leaders that when he “found any who belonged to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.” On his way to Damascus, he and the men travelling with him see a brilliant light flash from the sky, and hear a bodiless voice “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” When he asks who is addressing him, he is answered with “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.” Saul then loses his sight and is told to go to Damascus and wait. Somewhat like God choosing Mary to be the mother of Jesus, God then chooses a previously unknown disciple name Ananias to go find Saul, and lay hands on him. Saul’s sight is restored, he is baptized, and becomes one of Jesus’ most fervent followers. I’m at a loss to think of another New Testament instance where God struck someone down. More commonly, we read about Jesus performing a miracle to help someone in great need. I’ve heard stories of God calling people to serve in pretty dramatic ways, but not quite like this.

Hello Everyone!
Welcome to May! Things are getting really exciting around here! Our temporary donations shed will be delivered on Monday 5/5. We then have a week to move everything from Ed's shed into our new digs and make it comfortable for our donations staff. We may need some extra help moving things around that week so please let us know if you are going to be around and can help us get this move accomplished in a timely manner. But don't worry, we are not getting rid of Ed's Shed. Ed's Shed will be moved over to the church on Tuesday 5/13 for use by the church. There will be lots of moving parts over the next couple of weeks so thank you for your patience and understanding.
I'd like to take a moment to welcome some of our newest Volunteers. Please give a warm Welcome to Diana Hunt, Nan Todd, Milly Pan, Al Silva and Vicki Johnson! Our volunteer numbers continue to grow as we provide a welcoming atmosphere and friendly space in which people from our community feel welcome to be of service. Welcome everyone and thank you for being part of our crew!
For Pricers/Cashiers:
As of May 1, our standard price for coffee mugs will be $1. I have seen some mugs go out priced 50 cents or 75cents. I think it's best if we just have a standard base price of $1 from now on - with only a few special mugs (like Starbucks) priced higher according to retail. The Square button for mugs on the favorites screen is already set at $1 in case you forget. Thank you!
Clothing:
When we start to pull color tags to go on sale each month please remember to go through the children's rack. If at any time our children's rack gets too full, please pull older/lesser items and donate them to the Baptist Church or to NWC. Thank you.
A funny story?
Recently, Sandy Chasteen purchased a small day pack to take on an upcoming trip. A few days ago she started to pack her things in this bag and guess what she found? In one of the smaller pockets she found a fully loaded gun magazine! She sent me pictures! So it seems, we ALL need to do a better job of checking pockets, looking through purses and backpacks. This small bag was already out for sale on the shop floor which means that we All missed the ammo. Sandy said, "It's a good thing I found it before going to the airport!"
Art in Old Town Anacortes
On Friday May 2, from 6 to 8 pm Christ Episcopal Church will be participating in the Friday Art Walk. Stop by the church at 1216 7th Street to see Swinomish wood sculptor Kevin Paul's carvings of a salmon and eagle. The church will also be open so that you can see the stained glass windows designed by Jim Perry. Paintings by Dederick Ward will also be featured. Light refreshments will be served.
