Reflection

I think I wrote about Julian of Norwich last year—the “all manner of thing shall be well” woman. She is an inspiring theological optimist who Fr. John Julian, OJN refers to as “a primary voice of clarity and hope, something many of us need in this difficult time in the world.”

Julian’s real name is unknown. As an anchoress in the 1400’s, she lived through three epidemics of the Black Plague that killed approximately half of the population of East Anglia, England; assassinations of political and church leaders; and several wars; yet she tells us God always sees humankind as a very good creation. God, she believed, was unable to be wrathful, and that the wrath in us makes us imagine wrath in God. She stood inside the paradox of God’s great love and the world’s sin rather than attempting to solve or understand it. Her faith held that God had everything in hand and would make all things right in the end. We were only to trust and love.

Thomas Merton thought Julian might be the greatest English theologian in history. She presents us with a mystical alternative of loving and trusting God rather than battling one another, of resting in God’s love and using hope as an alternative to despair.

Julian is honored May 8th each year in the Episcopal church.

The Red Door Thrift Shop Update

Dawn Jex

Dawn Jex, Red Door Manager

Hello Everyone and Welcome to MAY!!!

We are in the last week before Mother's Day and it should be really busy! There is always a lot of last minute shopping going on around here so this should be a busy week! Then we move into our summer displays and father's day followed by our BIG 4th of July showcase! Joanne will be prepricing the boxes of Independence Day items today to get them ready for us. Thank you Joanne!

Things at the shop are running smoothly, we have a few new and returning volunteers so it may take a couple of weeks for things to shake out into some semblance of normal for the summer. If you are ever in the shop and not sure what to do, please pick a bookshelf in the back room and clean/organize it. These areas get less attention and can always use a volunteer's touch. These areas are: The crafts, office supplies, kids area, tools & misc, pet supplies, and Health and Beauty. The back room (elbow room?) is still feeling jumbly, I know. Just do your best.

I have noticed that we are already FULL to the BRIM of winter items. All of the boxes are full and the coat rack is groaning under the weight of coats. Please remember we are only to keep brand new items with tags, name brand items or items of high value. I know it is really hard to donate a good coat - but let's donate some good coats. I go through the winter items occasionally and donate a few or put them up for storage. I would also like to install some coat pegs on the back of the building and put coats there with a sign, "take a coat, leave a coat" for anyone in the community who might need one. This is a new project so if it sounds like something you can help with, please contact me.

Goodwill boxes - I have been finding soft clothing like items in the goodwill boxes lately. All Clothing, shoes, hats, gloves, purses, pillows, blankets - anything fabric should go to Northwest Center. The Goodwill boxes are only for hard things  - vases, books, toys, office stuff etc. Electronics or tools or kitchen gadgets that do not work should go in the garbage, not to Goodwill please. If you are unsure, please ask Debbie or I.

Sending lots of love and light today!
Hugs,
Dawn
