Reflection

Saying goodbye to someone you have known for years is tough, as is the case with the recent passing of our sister in Christ, Creamy Manning-Wilkins. Some of you already know the backstory of my long-time friendship with Creamy. We worked together at Skagit Valley Labs in Mount Vernon, and carpooled for several years. During that time, Creamy and Carleton were operating the Blue Rose Bed and Breakfast out of their home. Creamy would get up at 5 every morning, fix breakfast for the guests, drive over to the lab with me, work 8 hours, then come home and clean the rooms. At that time, she and Carleton were attending a Pentecostal church, but when our priest at the time, Father Fitzroy Richards, ran into them at Safeway and invited them to join Christ Church, things changed.

Many thanks to everyone that helped make Creamy’s Celebration of Life a big success. Thanks to the Hospitality Group for their amazing management of the bounteous food. Thanks to Rev. Diane for her very heartful homily. Thanks to Lynne, our organist, for tackling some of the hymns that Creamy had requested and thanks to those that sang out like Creamy would have requested. Meeting more of Creamy’s extended family was really a treat, especially seeing LaTinia and Quadir, her great grandchildren that lived with her and Carleton 17 years ago. As our gospel reading for this Sunday says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” Thank you, Lord, for bringing both Carleton and Creamy into our lives, and thanks for giving two very hard-working people their well-deserved eternal rest.

Arrival is considered a modern sci-fi masterpiece. This 2016 film features Amy Adams as a linguist tasked with learning how to communicate with extraterrestrials who have arrived on earth, before tensions lead to war. The thought-provoking and emotional story prioritizes communication and connection.

The Red Door Thrift Shop Update

Dawn Jex

Dawn Jex, Red Door Manager

Hello Everyone,

I'm sending you our weekly update early this week because my schedule is crazy and we have a holiday coming up. I totally forgot that we observe Independence Day on Friday, July 3rd. So the shop will be closed this coming week on 7/3! This is the last week before Independence day so please push Red, White and Blue items into the front window for one more week!

Thank you to everyone who helped out on Saturday for the Whale of a Sale. We had a really good day and made $1,300! Last year we made $900 so this is a significant jump in proceeds for that event. Thank you also to Debbie for running the shop on a Saturday and to all the volunteers who came in to make it happen.  We couldn't have done it without you! Another successful Whale of a Sale!

Our Annual Volunteer Appreciation Potluck is on Wednesday, August 26th at Washington Park. Please put it on your calendar. We also have a sign up sheet on the bulletin board in the shop for food that you would like to bring. Who is bringing the devilled eggs? Please?

Our next big display push will be for The Arts Fest at the beginning of August. I have started a pile of things to save for that display on the metal shelving in the pricing area. Please feel free to add to the stack so that we will have some awesome items to use for a big display mid July. And then after that it's Back to School time! Good Grief that happens fast!

I hope you all are doing well and enjoying the summer!

I will be out a couple of days this week as I have friends visiting from Georgia and it's my job to show them how wonderful life is in the PNW. Who knows, we might even stop by to shop at The Red Door!

Love you all and let me know if you have any questions.
Dawn
