Reflection

Sharman Badgett-Young

This week started in an unusual way. I gave a homily Sunday about sharing faith, and today I discussed that homily with my German-speaking friends at our weekly breakfast. We’ve known each other for about eight months now, and we very much enjoy our time together (in both English and German). One, an energy-charged, joy-filled woman, shared some of her beliefs with us, and I hope I can honor what she said here.

My friend loves her life and sees it as a gift from the universe. The more she expands herself out into the universe, taking in all the wonderful experiences and wonders there, the richer her life becomes. Her Yoga teacher tells the class not to contract their bodies protectively, but expand their bodies, breathe deeply, stand tall, and reach out as far as they can, which my friend does, both literally and figuratively. Wherever she goes, she finds things that make her laugh, and she loves to share them, texting us German expressions she has just discovered, or buying us treats and knickknacks. She makes me feel exuberantly loved.

As I listened to her, I felt excited by her words. I told her I loved her description, and thought it was what I believed as well, though what she called “the universe” I would call “God’s love.”

Some of our friends may not believe in God, yet I think we may all have a spark inside us that is divine, that came from the creator of the universe. I don’t know if this friend will recognize the divinity in that spark, but I pray she will. And I know the door will open if she knocks, and God will be waiting, especially for her, on the other side.

Weekly News

Dawn Jex, Red Door Manager

Dawn Jex

Hello Everyone!

Hope you are all doing well and enjoying this sunny weather we are having! I think today is going to be the warmest day of the year so far!

Speaking of heat, those of you who are working in the temporary donation shed. We DO have a fan for you that can be charged every night so that it has power. If it gets too hot in the shed, please let me know. We will just close the shed for the rest of the day. I do NOT want anyone having issues with heat out there OK? Thank you!

Things at the shop are going swimmingly. On Wednesday last week, as I was out front working on a display I could hear the women in the back room laughing with each other and it warmed my heart. I love that we are creating a wonderful place to connect with others for our volunteers! We are doing something right  beyond the money we earn for our community. Good Job everyone!

Speaking of Money, our Banker has informed us that as of the end of June we have made $97,421. Last year at this time we had made $88,649. That means we are up over 8,700 from where we were last year - Even with construction and less square footage! Way to go team!!!

We do have a few shifts available this month if you have some time:
Cashier 8/31 Morning shift.
Hard Goods Pricer 8/15 Morning or Afternoon
Donations 8/8, 8/10, 8/15, 8/17 Afternoons

Debbie and I are still finding piles of clothing without tags in the bins of Shorts and Athletic Pants that should have price tags. If you are a clothing pricer we will be speaking to each of you to make sure everyone is aware of where things go. If you are not a clothing pricer please do not put shorts or athletic pants anywhere without checking with us first. Thank you. We are going to be making some changes in this area this week to help clear up the confusion.

Please put August 13th on your calendar for the Annual Volunteer Potluck. It will be at 4 pm. Please let me know what you'd like to bring to share. The Committee will be meeting next wednesday to discuss having the potluck at Washington Park instead of the Church Property. If you have any input on that idea, please let me know ASAP.

I will be working on August calendars soon so please let me know if you plan to be gone. You can email me, or write it down in the spiral notebook for that purpose.

For any of you who are interested, Habitat for Humanity is planning to host a "Home Dedication" on August 9th from 11-1 at the Parkside Townhomes on 29th Street. Eric Johnson will be coming to dedicate our house at this event and it is open to the public. If you want to come and support my husband and I, tour our new home, see a little bit more of what Habitat is providing in Anacortes, we would love to have you there.

Happy Summer and Keep up the Good Work!
