Hospitality Ministry Help!

Grace Minton

Dear Friends,

Grace Minton

The Hospitality Ministry performs a number of special functions throughout the year—Agape Dinner, memorial receptions, Mass on the Grass, and soup suppers. We (Jerlyn Caba, Judy McClelland and I) also arrange coffee hour every single Sunday, and here’s where we really need help. As many of you know, Geoff and Jerlyn spend the summer months in Minnesota, and in the past, Carol and Art Watson traveled from Arizona to stay in Geoff and Jerlyn’s home in their absence. Carol graciously filled Jerlyn’s place in Hospitality for the summer months (and Art sang beautifully in the choir). Unfortunately, the Watsons aren’t coming to Anacortes this year so Judy and I really need another person to help.

We’re looking for coffee hour-loving folks to sign up for two-week stints for the summer months. The only requirements are the ability to get to the Parish Hall early on Sundays (around 9:45) to start the coffee and set out whatever food is being presented, and clean up afterwards by running the dishwasher and putting away dishes. We provide on-the-job training and the rewards are immense!

Please let me know which two weeks you’d like to sign up for.
With thanks,
Grace

Deacon Eric’s Update

One Parish One Prisoner
(https://www.undergroundministries.org/opop)

I met with Pastor Stephanie Hankey, Westminster Presbyterian Church Anacortes (18 Jun 25) to discuss their participation in the OPOP program.
They are paired with Shane, a young man who was from Anacortes and is expecting to be released from prison this winter. He will initially live at New Earth Recovery in Mount Vernon, where he expects to remain for some time, after which he hopes to remain in the Skagit Valley. (New Earth Recovery serves adults who seek a structured, faith-based recovery program for drug and alcohol addiction.) Westminster began communicating with Shane almost two years ago, and their OPOP team has placed a large poster in a hallway that enables the congregation to know more about Shane and the OPOP program.
Thus far, this has been a mutually transformative experience for both the parish and the prisoner. One Parish One Prisoner (OPOP) has provided the monthly training which will equip the Westminster team to build a supportive pre-release relationship with Shane. The concept is that a local church community has everything a releasing person might need to rebuild a new life: trusting friendships and community, rides to appointments, job connections, funds to pay off stranglehold fines, acquiring a driver’s license, providing hope.
The cost: One Parish One Prisoner is funded in part by participating churches’ tuition, operating on a sliding scale:
• 12 - 50 congregants / 6 - 10 families: $250
• 50 - 300 congregants / 10 - 75 families: $1,000
Next week, I’ll follow up with a report on what OPOP provides to its teams.

Old Friends Club
(https://www.oldfriendsclub.org

I contacted Tanya Su, Program Coordinator for the Old Friends Club at the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church. I have an appointment to talk with her—upon her return from Europe—on 9 July at 10AM. I have a number of questions for her that I heard at our Parish meeting with Cecily Kaplan, i.e., what’s the governance model; from where come the volunteers; when do they expect to open more than one day per week (and is one day per week a viable program?); what about additional insurance costs?
Vashon Island Presbyterian Church’s Old Friends Club is still being constructed. I reached out to their program coordinator, and I’m still awaiting a reply. (School is out, after all).

Motel Voucher Program

In the past, Christ Episcopal Church/The Red Door Thrift Shop provided yearly grants from our Community Support funds for the Motel Voucher Program. In this program, a number of churches pooled their motel voucher funds at the Anacortes Family Center, and thus churches could send inquiring citizens directly to AFC, in one-stop shopping. The idea was that we would not oblige homeless people to go from church-to-church in search of vouchers for motels, and it also enabled churches (in our monthly meetings at the Family Center) to have better oversight of who we all are actually supporting.
For the past five-ish years we have not supported this program because it received significant funding from Skagit County, via grants from the Federal Government. As of 30 June 2025, that Federal/County funding will dry up, and the program will be funded primarily by local church donations. With that, the program will be scaled back, with priority being given to Anacortes and San Juan Island residents for one-or-two night stays at motels. Recipients will be those in desperate need for overnight shelter (fleeing domestic violence, stranded, suddenly displaced, and to those who are within a day-or-two of coming into the Family Center.) Given the need and the good results of the program, I fully expect that Christ Episcopal Church/The Red Door will find it in our collective heart to help fill the funding gap.

Help Wanted

I’m hoping to form a small panel of Christ Church members to help us determine our level of participation in the OPOP and OFC programs. (Gotta love those abbreviations.) This is not a commitment for life; rather, it will be a group that will help us think through the modalities of starting these programs. Please contact me at AnacortesEric@gmail.com or at (360) 840-5415 [mobile].

Hello Everyone!

I have a lot of businessy stuff to go over today. I'll try to make it quick and totally not boring for you. LOL

Available Shifts:

WHALE OF A SALE - I am looking for one more person to be in the shop on Saturday morning from 10-12:30. We had one person sign up who cannot make it. Please let me know asap if you are available. There isn't anything specific I need you to do - you can price clothes or hard goods or just be available to help shoppers.

I am looking for a Cashier to work on Tuesday afternoons from 12:30 till 3 pm. This is an ongoing shift for someone who is able to multitask with kindness and grace all while being accurate with funds. Please let me know if that sounds like you or someone you know!

I am looking for someone to Price Clothing on Friday afternoons from 12:30-3. Our current person is taking some time to help babysit her granddaughter and she is unsure when she will be able to return so this is an ongoing position as well.

I am looking for a couple of people to come in on Tuesday and/or Friday from 11-1 to help the cashier package items, open the locked case, greet guests etc.

Clothing Procedures
We have $1 bins of clothing on the black shelf unit that are not tagged or priced. No tagged items should be in these bins. All tagged clothing should be on a hanger or in the appropriate bins. Shorts and Athletic Pants are priced more than a dollar and placed in the bins on the floor under the women's pants and coats. If you are unsure of whether to put a price tag on something or where to place it please ask Debbie or I. I know we've changed things a bit lately due to lack of space so this can be confusing.

Breaker, breaker 10-9er
If you would like to use them, we have some small radios available for use. This is a great tool if you are in the shed and you want to call on the radio to a manager to see if we have room for clothing or hard goods inside the building. Less Walking around - more talking around. The radios are near Dawn's Desk.

Happy Last Week of June! Hope to see you soon!
