Weekly Update 6 June 2025

Reflection

The Rev. Courtney Jones

The Rev. Courtney Jones

What is Pentecost?

  • It’s a feast day:

· The Feast of Pentecost, which falls fifty days after Easter, is when we remember the coming of the Holy Spirit among the apostles, as described in Acts 2. The name comes from the Greek pentekoste, which means "fiftieth."

· On the day of Pentecost, we celebrate the Holy Spirit and how the Holy Spirit enlivens and inspires a group of people called “the Church.”

· Pentecost is considered to be the “birthday of the Church,” and is a day to celebrate the faithfulness of the many saints who have come before us.

· Pentecost is one of the 7 principal feasts of the Church year.  (The other six are:  Easter, Christmas, Epiphany, Ascension, Trinity Sunday, and All Saints)

· The liturgical color for the day of Pentecost is RED, to represent joy and the fire of the Spirit.

  • It’s a season:

· The Season after Pentecost encompasses all the Sundays from the Day of Pentecost until the end of the church year.

· This long season after Pentecost is also sometimes referred to as Ordinary Time (because we count the Sundays using ordinal numbers— Third Sunday after Pentecost, Fourth Sunday after Pentecost, Fifth Sunday after Pentecost, and so on.)

· The liturgical color for the Season after Pentecost is GREEN (for growth).

· Ordinary time is a reminder that the long walk of faith isn’t always highs and lows but is made up of the stuff of everyday life.

Volunteer Opportunity:
The Foundation for Academic Endeavors

The Foundation for Academic Endeavors (FAE) began in 2012 at La Iglesia Episcopal de La Resurrección in Mount Vernon. It was started by young Latine parishioners attending Skagit Valley College and a group of volunteers from across the diocese who created a summer camp for their siblings. With support from churches across the Diocese, the program quickly grew.

In 2015, FAE became a nonprofit and now serves 275 low-income Latine students—from pre-K to high school—and 19 college students preparing for careers in education. To date, FAE has supported over 1,975 students and 90 college fellows, nearly half of whom now work in education while the rest are completing their education. By hosting the program at Skagit Valley College, FAE shows students and families that college is possible.

However, in 2025, holding the program on an open campus creates a new level of risk to our undocumented parents or for anyone who may appear to be undocumented. In the past weeks, we have seen on national and local news examples of people who are undocumented or even documented being deported in violation of their legal right to due process. Higher education is under attack while anti-immigration rhetoric and action is ramping up.

Parents and children are telling us that they are increasingly anxious. In order to keep our students, teachers and families safe, FAE is requesting support from our allies in the community. We would like to have volunteers on hand who are trained to document ICE or CBP action and who can call for Skagit Valley College security staff to ensure our FAE family’s safety.

Two trainings will be required; one is an online child safety training through Bridget Collins House (sorry, Safeguarding training won’t be enough) and an in-person “Know Your Rights” training that will include procedures specific to the Skagit Valley College location.

The training will be held on Tuesday June 10 at 6:30pm, in the multipurpose room at SVC. Please RSVP to Rev. Carol Rodin, carolrodin@skagitfae.org and sign up to be a Vecino by filling out this form.

Dawn Jex

I just can't believe it's June already? That is amazing to me AND we have sunshine too! Double the joy. LOL Anyway, Here is your weekly update.

Things are going really well in the shop. Thank you all for your patience as we prepare for construction. I know that Change is a four letter word to many of you but you are handling it with grace and ease. Things will continue to change a little here and there as Debbie and I refine where everything is going to go on the shelves and according to what we get donated..

And I know that begs the question, "WHEN are we going to start construction?" Here's what I know: The bank is working on our loan - almost there but not quite. And our construction company and the Diocese are finalizing our contract. I was told hopefully within a month we will break ground but you all know how things go in construction. Keep those prayers coming and fingers crossed for everything to go smoothly.

The Good news is that even though we have made changes to how much retail space and donation space we have - we actually had the best month so far this year in May! So even though things are changing, donors are still donating, and shoppers are still shopping and each of you keep showing up to work and it is showing in our bottom line! So thank you, thank you, thank you for showing up and doing the work. (hugs here!)

One recent change for Mondays, At the end of the day on Monday, I would like to pick up all of the totes off of the floor and place them up on the benches or in the back room so that the cleaner can get a good swipe at the floors. We have had to use more containers on the floor than I like due to our smaller footprint and lack of space. If you work Monday and can help pick up these bins that would be much appreciated.

We are still in need of a Thursday morning cashier starting June 19th. It would be great if this person could stay in this shift until October.

We are also in need of a Tuesday afternoon Donations person to cover 6/17 and 6/24.

I do have a couple of other small shifts needs - If you have some availability please see me when you come in next.

Sales this week will be:
Empty frames and artwork half price
White Tagged clothing is $1
Plug in Kitchen Appliances are half price.

The Best Story Ever - Paraphrased from an email I received.

"I was working in the donation shed and noticed a young man hanging out by the back of the shop. I could tell that he was probably homeless. He came over to the shed to see if we maybe had some underwear he could have. I didn't have any but told him he could come to the shop next time we were open to get some. The young man then saw a large duffle type bag and asked if he could have that. As I noticed he had several small inadequate plastic bags with all of his possessions I told him he could have the bag. I hope that's ok. I'm willing to pay for the bag if needed. Just let me know."

And my response is that our volunteer did exactly the right thing. The young homeless man is known to us and I have told him that we can help him with underwear, socks or a warm coat if needed. I've also offered him a bag for carrying his things. I am so proud of our volunteers that are showing the love of Christ to our homeless neighbors. Isn't that what we are really here for? To be of service to others? To show them care and understanding? How great is it that he knows we are here to help him if needed.

What a great example and something that makes me very happy to work at The Red Door.

Lots of Love to everyone,
Dawn
