Reflection

Grace Minton

They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, ‘Hosanna!’ ‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord—the King of Israel!” (John 12:13)

Grace Minton

As we approach Holy Week I am overwhelmed with possibilities for reflection. This time is full of lessons with so much meaning and solemnity that it’s difficult to know where to focus my attention.

When I was a child, I seem to recall Palm Sunday as a celebratory event. A parade! Jesus riding a “borrowed” donkey with palms and cloaks spread out before him! As an adult, I see that it’s so much more: it’s the beginning of the crucifixion that Christ had been telling about for so long and which his followers didn’t want to believe. Jesus didn’t deny the crowds’ calls to recognize him as the King of Israel. Was this a means of provoking action against him? His life on earth was filled with his teachings, his parables, and his ability to see the love and value in the “least among us”. Hope for the world is found in following His footsteps.

The Red Door Thrift Shop Update

Dawn Jex

Dawn Jex, Red Door Manager

Hello Everyone and welcome to the last full week of March.

It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that one of our newest volunteers, Marisha Nowak, passed away early Friday morning, March 20th. While Marisha only volunteered with us for a short time, she was a long-time supporter of The Red Door. As a volunteer she loved processing clothing donations and frequently brought in freeze-dried candies for us all to enjoy.  We will greatly miss Marisha’s bright energy.

Shop News:
We have been having a lot of items going to the cash register without a price tag. I am not sure if this is because customers are removing tags or if we are missing some items. Please make an effort to tag every item that goes out on the floor. Also - please do not use the wording "50 cents or as priced." This wording encourages customers to remove a price tag to get that lower price. Feel free to just price everything in the box the same - "All wrapping paper is 50 cents" for example.

For those of you who price clothing - Please remember to always price shirts/sweaters/coats only on the left sleeve. This is where the cashier looks for the price tags and it also allows the customer to easily see the price when items are hung on the rack facing left. Thank you!

A few weeks ago I asked us all to price every purse and belt individually as they go out on the floor. I am now going to ask that we do that for all of the hats. Ball caps are normally $1.00 each but we have some summer hats going out and some other hats that should be priced up. So from now on, all hats should have a price tag - price them according to their value. Thank you.

The Jewelry to be priced bin has been moved to my office. It was too high for Kay Marie to reach so I put the basket (which is labeled) in my office. Please put jewelry to be priced in this basket.

Management Schedule
- Dawn: Working Monday and Tuesday 3/30 and 31; out of town April 1st – April 6th.
- Debbie: Off Monday and Tuesday; working Wednesday – Friday.
- If you have questions or need to report an absence, Debbie’s number is posted on the shop bulletin board.

Cashier Best Practices
When accepting payment, please place the customer's bill on top of the black cash register box until you have finished making change. This provides clear proof of the denomination if a discrepancy arises.

Sustainability and Supplies in Donations
To reduce costs, I have purchased a smaller garbage can so we can utilize the white garbage bags we receive. Please use the smaller bags whenever possible, reserving the larger bin and black bags for bulkier items like bedding or heavy coats.

Finally, I want to thank you all for making The Red Door such a warm and welcoming environment. Several volunteers have recently shared how much they enjoy working here because of the team's encouragement and thoughtfulness. Thank you for everything you do.

Hugs all around,
Dawn
