Invitation to Silence

Sharman
Badgett-Young

The spiritual discipline of silence is an opportunity for growth. Silence can create a retreat from the demands and distractions of the world around us, a time of rest, sabbath, or release of stress. Silence creates space for prayer—talking to and listening for God. It can be a time of self-examination, confession, and forgiving others. Reading scripture during silence is a gift to our minds, an invitation to drop more deeply into its verses and seek understanding and direction from the Holy Spirit.

Silence gives us a chance to truly listen to what loved ones want to say or hear the opinions of people who need time to frame a response. In silence we can enjoy the sounds of God’s natural creation—wind in the leaves, water on rock, the utterances of God’s creatures. Let’s create opportunities for silence in our Lenten journey—larger silences in conversation, centering time before worship, and extended chunks of silence for prayer and contemplation. And if silence makes you uncomfortable, try listening to a soft recording of random bells or nature sounds instead of music with words or tunes you recognize. Lent is an opportunity to fast from daily sounds and see what God might do within us when we turn off TV, music, video, or podcasts. Invite the Lord to surprise you.

The Red Door Thrift Shop Update

Dawn Jex

Dawn Jex, Red Door Manager

Hello All,

Since we have been having some really cold and icy weather (last week), I thought it was a good time to remind everyone that if the schools are closed then we are also closed. If the schools are running late a couple of hours then we will be open as usual. I will try to text or email the team who is working that day to let you know as soon as possible. You can also text or call me at 360-631-0587 anytime.  Please be careful out there!

For Cashiers, if you are unfamiliar with our Voucher and/or Gift Certificate procedures, please take a look at those binders that are behind the cash register to familiarize yourself with them. And just ask Debbie or I If you have any questions. We have had a few vouchers and GC's redeemed lately so it's always a good idea to remind ourselves how to accept them.

It's come to my attention that some of you did not know that we switch clothing tag colors every month. I'm sorry, It looks like I missed that training with some of you. If you are pricing hard goods and you need to use a color tag for napkins or tablecloths etc.,  please be aware that you should be using the same color tag that the clothing pricer is using. For February we are using blue tags and next month we will move to white tags. There is a color chart at the clothing station that shows which color is for which month.

I also just want to take a moment to thank everyone for the time that you spend at The Red Door. I know life can get busy yet many of you are working multiple shifts per week and filling in when needed. You know who you are...and I see you.

Today, I want to specifically thank Sarah Workman and Susan Adam for helping out so much with coverage for the Cashier shifts lately. I also want to thank Eric Tietjen for being willing to do two shifts per week in Donations. And Steven Mayer for agreeing to work the first Friday of each month in Donations. You have made my job so much easier. Thank you.

Enjoy the sunshine today!
